The origin of the ketchup is bad on hot dogs theory according to Joey of
Joey's Hot Dogs in Richmond. Evidently Joey's Dad was also a hot dog seller...Joey's Dad claimed that the depression caused the backlash against ketchup. Supposedly people struggling during the 1930's would come into a Diner and order up a cup of coffee with their last bit of change. They would then pour the ketchup into the saucer and eat the ketchup as a cold and sweet version of tomato soup. It did not take long for the Diner owners to realize this and they removed ketchup from the countertop. Thus the people that actually bought hot dogs used mustard more. Nobody would eat mustard as a soup replacement. The theory has a few holes, but that was Joey's story.
